No Room to Be Selfish with COVID-19

As the sister of someone who is at high risk of serious complications from this disease, and the daughter of two elderly parents, I implore you…

Stop with the jokes.
Stop with the memes.
Stop touching your face and coughing into your hands.
Stop putting your travel plans ahead the lives of your fellow human beings.

Stop being selfish.

Believe me, I understand that it’s inconvenient. I myself had plans to study abroad this summer that are now in limbo. It sucks. It’s disappointing. But I know that it isn’t worth the life of my family members.

Please remember that even if you are not at risk of dying from this disease, you might very well give it to someone who will. It is the responsibility of all of us to stay home as much as we can, to wash our hands, to disinfect surfaces, and to slow the spread of COVID-19. If my family members get sick, they may need a hospital bed. If the system becomes overwhelmed, they might not get one.

So please…

Stop with the jokes.
Stop with the memes.
Stop touching your face and coughing into your hands.
Stop putting your travel plans ahead the lives of your fellow human beings.

Stop being selfish.

And remember that those 3% of people still mean something to someone.
